Judged For The Content of Their Lunch Box

This week alone I have had four separate messages from parents that have had their children being picked on because of their packed lunch….yes that’s right packed lunch!

The foods that caused such uproar were salami sandwiches….coronation chicken wrap….breadsticks and hummus and pasta salad and even good old tuna! crazy isn’t it? that a packed lunch could cause so much distress, why should it matter to others what another child is eating?

Comments like ‘err your food stinks and you will too if you eat that’; are so hurtful to young children. The children concerned were deeply upset by their lunch being a hot topic and it got very personal for them; one little boy won’t eat any of the food concerned now which is awful as he used to enjoy this food.

I find it so sad that children can be judged by the content of their lunch box, as a mum to a 4 year old that will be starting school in September I feel deeply concerned by this as I haven’t bought my son up to be a ham sandwich child (he loves ham don’t get me wrong) but l have opened him up to lots of different foods as I come from Flemish heritage so we are quite continental when it comes to food (my nanna’s recipes were the best).

I find it alarming that children can be scrutinised and teased for their  type of lunch! they were all healthy lunches too. Wouldn’t it be boring if we all ate the same? We should embrace diversity not crush it!
once again I think this calls for early education as the youngest child was just 5.
